What you didn't know about RUP and UML

You all have heard about RUP. Some of you may know RUP very well. But do you know that RUP is agile? Do you know that RUP is engineered to help you manage outsourced development? Do you know that RUP is prepared for the future of software development, including aspect-orientation and active software? Do you really know what RUP is all about?

Modern software development means object orientation, component based design, use case driven development, and the Unified Modeling Language (UML). These technologies are efficiently interwoven in the Rational Unified Process (RUP). The talk will touch upon these matters, but focus on some key questions:

  • What makes RUP fundamentally different from other processes.
  • What makes RUP an agile process? How does RUP relate to XP?
  • What makes RUP prepared for the future -aspect-oriented programming, agent-based development, etc.?
  • Why will RUP allow you to focus on creative tasks and to eliminate "no-brain" work?
  • How to use RUP in organisations whereby software development is outsourced
  • How RUP can reduce the risk of projects failure
  • How RUP can reduce time to market

You will learn from a father of these technologies something you didn't know, but you care a lot about.

 

 
Dr. Ivar Jacobson, Vice President of Business Engineering, is the inventor of the OOSE method, and he is also the founder of Objectory AB in Sweden, which merged with Rational Software Corporation (today IBM Rational). Dr. Jacobson is the principal author of two influential and best-selling books Object-Oriented Software Engineering--A Use Case Driven Approach (Computer Language Productivity award winner in 1992) and The Object Advantage--Business Process Reengineering with Object Technology.

He has also authored several widely referenced papers on object technology. One of the most famous papers is his first OOPSLA '87 paper entitled "Object-Oriented Development in an Industrial Environment," which presented the first truly object-oriented method ever published. Ivar Jacobson's use-case driven approach has had a very strong impact on the entire OOAD industry, and he himself has become one of its "icons." Consequently, he is frequently invited keynote speaker and panelist, debating OOAD topics with colleagues and methodologists such as Grady Booch, Jim Rumbaugh, Steven Mellor, and Rebecca Wirfs-Brock at major OO conferences around the world.

He is well known for his pioneering work and more than 20 years of experience in using object methods for the design of large real-time systems. His early object-based design technique has evolved into the international standard ITU (formerly CCITT)/SDL.

Dr. Jacobson also regularly serves on the OOPSLA, ECOOP, and TOOLS program committees, and he is a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Object-Oriented Programming.

In 1994, Ivar Jacobson received the first Swedish Computer Association (SCA) award (the Kjell Hultman prize) for "extraordinary achievement in promoting efficiency and productivity in the development and use of information technology."

Bridging System Views in Software Design

Software development has matured from heuristic practice to an engineering discipline. Nowadays software engineers can benefit from a solid stock of basic research addressing specification, modelling, design and implementation techniques for sequential and concurrent systems. The software engineer faces dif- ferent system views manifesting themselves as data model, communication model, state transition model or process model. Software development must safely bridge system views on different levels of abstraction. Against this general background, we present a model for communicating components along with transformations refining the component's behaviour, interface and state. In the external view, a component forms a black box interacting with the environment by message passing whereas the internal view discloses the component's state.

We understand states as abstractions of communication histories and present methods for systematically transforming the component's behaviour into a statebased implementation. We conclude with a critical assessment of applying formal methods from academics to industrial software engineering.

 

 

Dr. Walter Dosch is full professor at the University of Lübeck and head of the Institute of Software Technology and Programming Languages. His research interests focus on the foundations of software engineering including spe-cification, modeling and design of sequential, concurrent and reactive systems. In the field of programming langua-ges, his research concentrates on high-level programming concepts for parallel and distributed applications along with their efficient implementation.

 

Dr. Dosch received the Staatsexamen degree (equivalent to MSc) in Mathematics and Physics and the Dr. rer. nat. degree (equivalent to PhD) in Computer Science from the Technical Uni-versity of Munich in 1975 and 1987, respectively. From 1988 to 1996 he was Professor for Theoretical Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Augsburg. Du-ring the election period 2000 to 2002, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Sciences at the University of Lübeck.

Dr. Dosch joined the program committees of more than 50 international conferences, coautho-red two books, and published over 100 papers in refereed proceedings and journals. He served as the General Chair and Program Chair at international conferences in the USA, Europe and Asia, and contributed invited plenary lectures to several conferences. He is member of the editorial board of two journals and obtained funds from the European Union for projects un-der the ESPRIT and INTERREG programmes.
